From Mothering Heights

ODE TO MOTHERING HEIGHTS

Rattlesnakes, coyotes and bears! Oh, my!
Lightning bolts that strike from the sky!
Snow storms that pile up the drifts tushy-high!
I live here, and my friends all wonder, “But why?”

Winds blow and trees fall and power lines droop.
My driveway ascends like a steep loop-de-loop.
In the autumn the leaves pile up over the stoop,
And my garden is loaded with white-tail deer poop!

It’s not always easy, this I will admit,
But Mothering Heights just seems a good fit.
While hardships quite often challenge my wit,
I live where I live, and I don’t mind a bit

The sunrise is glorious from up on my hill.
And starlight at night is such a big thrill.
The view in the winter, in spite of the chill,
Can be very rewarding if you stand very still.

The titmice and juncos and blue jays abound,
While morning doves feed on the seed on the ground.
The nuthatches cling to the trees upside down,
Except when the young red-tailed hawk comes around.

The raptors, the squirrels and raccoons in the trees,
The sweet scent of wild flowers borne by a breeze,
Flora and fauna alike, here to please,
You see, it’s about all the birds and the bees.

The woodpeckers’ drumming, the overhead flights,
The warm springtime days and the cool summer nights,
The wildlife that live here have all the rights.
And THAT’S why I love my Mothering Heights.
